2010 MARCO BOATS FISHING TOURNAMENT
Our annual Fishing Challenge was held this year March 12 & 13. Although the forecast leading up to the weekend was ominous, we pressed on hoping that the weather man would be proven wrong.
We arrived at the Tauranga Game Fishing Club and met with Tony from Kilwell Sports (Our Major Sponsors) who helped set up our prize display. We encouraged him from the sidelines and supplied a steady stream of beer to help keep him going.
Thursday evening saw our entrants win some great spot prizes. Our Early Bird prize was won by Pat Wilkins from Taranaki who walked away with a wash-down kit generously donated by Lusty & Blundell.
Friday morning proved to be smooth sailing as our anglers set off to fish. The early lead for the trophy was taken by Team Prime after reeling in 5 Kingies. As the day progressed the winds started to pick up, but nothing too major. The Marco Party Patrol Boat, captained by Bryan Horne, set off at a leisurely 10:30am with Helen, Dayne, Kris, Diane, Tony from Kilwell Sports and Steve from Fishing News aboard. The going was slow due to a heavy drinking session by Helen & Dayne until 4am that morning, however, we soon got into the swing of things and the Vodka and Jelly Snakes came out of hiding. There were some serious fishing attempts going on, however the fishing impeded our ability to drink, so we had to stow the rods away. Tony & Steve put on a brave face as the fish evaded their attempts at capture, however, the beer, rum and savouries succumbed to their fate.
The anglers from Reel Fun hit a snag as problems with their prop saw them getting towed in by The Lads Workbench. They did however, have a good day of fishing and Rene from Reel Fun ended up taking out the Crayfish Prize.
Friday afternoon at weigh in, after numerous rums and beer, our Weighmaster, Steve Patullo, managed to stay upright with the help of the side of the weigh-in hut, and Co-Weighmaster, Tony Dunn, was there to translate the weights of the fish.
Our Trophy winner last year, Hot Topic, made an impressive showing taking out the 1st and 2nd prizes for Snapper, however, it seemed apparent that lady luck would need to be on their side after the 14kg and 13kg Kingies hooked by Team Prime set them to a head-start in the Trophy stakes.
Saturday morning we were raring to go at 11am. After a bit of a flat start saw Tony Dunn lose his phone in the ocean, his worries were soon gone as the savouries and beer offered what comfort they could. Aboard the boat today we had Ron and Cherry Kingham from Weldtrade Engineering who were the lucky winners of a day on the Patrol Boat, compliments of our sponsors, Supagas. Before too long they had baited up hooks and were dropping a line. The excitement reached boiling point when Kris reeled in a big Kawahai. Ok, it wasn’t a Marlin, but she had to start somewhere! It bled all over the deck, and Captain Bryan came to the rescue with his bucket and water.
After a day of fun, sun and fishing, we headed back in. The calls through to Seacoms seemed to have been a steady flow and we headed off to the weigh station somewhat less wobbly than yesterday. A big thank you to Bob and Brenda from Seacoms who provided our tournament communications for the weekend. Their up to date reports kept our anglers aware of the sea conditions and who to beat in the fishing stakes.
That evening at Prize Giving we gave away a 480 Thresher on a Voyager Trailer to a lucky angler. This year, 2 days prior to casting our lines out, we received a call from Internal Affairs regarding the lucky draw status of our boat. Unfortunately we were unable to lucky draw it this year, so we had to come up with an alternative plan. We took the entire tournament's fishing and took the average weight and awarded the prize to the person who was closest to the average. We had a tie! Marc Tecofsky and Steve O’Halloran were both in the running for the boat. This resulted in a skill challenge to re-assemble a rod and reel, the winner taking the boat home. After a nerve wracking wait, Marc Tecofsky took out the challenge and the boat.
The overall trophy winner was Team Prime, who caught 94.625kg of fish. Team members Nigel Cluitt, Peter Cluitt, Shane Cluitt, Johnny Calley, Jordy Dye all put in a great effort for the weekend.
All up, it was a fun weekend. Thank you to all of our anglers, without you we wouldn’t have a competition. Thanks to Grant, Julie and the team at Tauranga Game Fishing Club for all of their help over the weekend and putting up with our breakdancing on the Saturday night. Thank you to all of our sponsors who donated to the event, we appreciate everything you guys do for us.
We look forward to seeing you all again next year.
